How To Test a Window Motor
Before replacing your window motor, test it directly with a 12V power source. This rules out switches, wiring, and fuses — and confirms whether the motor itself is the problem.
Why test before replacing? When a power window stops working, the fault is often the switch, wiring, or a blown fuse — not the motor. This test bypasses all of that and applies power directly to the motor, giving you a definitive answer before you spend money on parts.
Safety first: Handle with care — live wires can cause sparks, fire, or injury. Do not allow the two wires to touch once connected to the battery. Treat them as live cables at all times.
Remove the door trim panel to access the window motor. The motor is mounted inside the door, attached to the regulator.
Find the window motor wiring plug and disconnect it to isolate the motor from the vehicle's electrical system.
Connect a 12V power source (e.g. car battery with wire offcuts) directly to the motor terminals. The motor should spin in one direction.
Reverse the polarity — swap the positive and negative wires — and the motor should spin in the opposite direction.
⚠️ Keep wires apart at all times once connected to the battery
The motor is working correctly. The fault is elsewhere — check the switch, child lock, fuses, wiring, or regulator.
Strong indication of internal motor failure. The motor will need to be replaced.
Basic bench test also works: You can also remove the motor completely and test it on a workbench using a 12V battery and wire offcuts. It's not the ideal setup, but it gives you a clear answer with minimal tools.
