Power Window Lubrication
One of the easiest ways to extend the life of your power window motor is to keep the window channels well lubricated. Here's what to use, what to avoid, and how to do it right.
All electric motors are designed to work within designated load specifications. When window channels are dry or dirty, the motor works harder than it should - leading to premature failure. Regular lubrication is cheap insurance.
Food-Grade Silicone Spray
Readily available from any hardware store or auto shop. Comes with a handy straw nozzle for precise application into tight channels. Leaves no residue, won't gum up, and is safe on rubber seals.

- Food-grade silicone spray
- Dry PTFE lubricant spray
❌ Avoid These
- Grease — gums up over time
- WD-40 — attracts dirt, dries out
- Engine oil or general-purpose oil
- Petroleum-based sprays on rubber seals
Note on graphite powder: It works well but can leave dark residue that may stain clothing. Silicone spray is the cleaner, easier option for most people.
Lower the window fully to expose the full length of the rubber bailey channels inside the door frame.
Attach the straw nozzle to your silicone spray can for precise application.
Spray along the full length of both the inner and outer window channels (the rubber strips the glass slides through). If you have the door trim off, spray the channels inside the door cavity too.
Operate the window up and down a few times to work the lubricant into the channels.
Wipe away any excess from the glass with a clean cloth.
At least twice a year
We recommend lubricating your window channels every 6 months — or whenever you notice the window moving slower than usual or making noise. If you're already doing a service or have the door trim off for any reason, it's the perfect time.
